"Following Marcelo's announcement that he is retiring as a professional football player, Real Madrid C. F. would like to express its gratitude and affection to him. Marcelo belongs to the history of Real Madrid and is one of the great legends of the club and of world football.

Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2006, at the age of 18, and was an essential player in one of the most successful periods in the 122 years of the club's history. During the 16 seasons in which he has represented the club and its crest, he won 25 trophies in 546 games: 5 European Cups, 4 Club World Cups, 3 Uefa Super Cups, 6 LaLiga titles, 2 Copa del Rey trophies and 5 Spanish Super Cups.

On an individual level, as a Real Madrid player, Marcelo has been included 6 times in the FIFA FIFPRO World 11.

In addition to his trophies with Real Madrid, Marcelo won the 2013 Confederations Cup with Brazil, winning 1 silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games and 1 bronze medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

With Fluminense F. C., he won 1 Copa Libertadores and 1 Recopa Sudamericana.

Marcelo is the 3. foreign player in terms of appearances in a Real Madrid shirt. He was one of the scorers in the final of La Décima in Lisbon and the captain who lifted La Decimocuarta in Paris. His incredible footballing flair and the image of a player who gave his all for this shirt, representing the values of Real Madrid, will forever remain in the hearts of all Real Madrid fans.

The Real Madrid president, Florentino Pérez, described Marcelo as “One of the greatest left-backs in Real Madrid and world football history, and we had the privilege of watching him for a long time. He is one of our greatest legends and Real Madrid is and always will be his home.”

Real Madrid wishes him and his family the best of luck in this new stage of his life."
